How to Setup the HP Printer on a Network in OS X 10.7 and Newer

DriverDosh - Today I will guide you how to set up an AirPrint-capable HP Printer to print using AirPrint in OS X 10.7 and newer. These steps can be used when AirPrint is the preferred method, or when then is no driver available in Apple Software Update or at HP.com. Before you continue to the following tutorials, make sure the printer is already connected to a wireless or wired (Ethernet) network to install and use the printer.

How to Setup the HP Printer with AirPrint

Apple's AirPrint provides basic print functionality for printers that are connected to a wireless or wired (Ethernet) network. No additional print software is required when you add an AirPrint-capable printer with AirPrint. For OS X Yosemite (v10.10), OS X El Capitan (v10.11), macOS Sierra (v10.12) users, AirPrint also provides basic fax and/or scan capability.
Some printers might require a firmware update to enable AirPrint-compatibility. We always recommends updating to the latest firmware version for the best performance and functionality.
  • Make sure you have an AirPrint-capable printer.
  • Turn on the printer and make sure that it is in a Ready state.
  • Make sure that the printer is connected to the wireless or wired (Ethernet) network.
  • Click the Apple menu and then click System Preferences.
  • Click Printers and Scanners.
  • Click the plus sign (+) at the bottom of the left pane.
  • On the Default tab in the list of available printers, click the name of the printer.
Note: Make sure that the printer kind is Bonjour or Bonjour Multifunction.

  • In the Use box, select AirPrint or Secure AirPrint.
